Stevie continued to play a semi-amateur until 1969, where he entered the blues scene in Austin, Texas. In a summer love in 1970 formed his first band in the long term, the Blackbirds with Stevie and Kim Davis on guitars, Christian dePlicque on vocals, Roddy Colonna & John Huff on drums, Noel Deis on keyboards and David Frame on bass. In late 1971 he left school and moved to Austin with his band, establishing his base at a club called "Hills Country Club." The only fact worthy of being featured in the next few years is that in 1974 destroyed Stevie gets his Stratocaster, the "Number One" would not let the rest of his career. Until 1977 he participated in bands like "The Nightcrawlers", "Paul Ray & The Cobras" (which won the award for Band of the Year in March 1977) and "Triple Threat Revue."
By September 1977 final Stevie as his band, Double-Trouble (better known as Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double-Trouble), Tommy Shannon (bass) and Chris Layton (drums). Later, in 1985 a fourth member will join the band, a virtuoso keyboardist Reese Wynans. They moved within the state of Texas until August 19, 1979, when they played at the San Francisco Blues Festival. On July 11, 1981 the band is filmed performing at a festival. The following year the manager Stevie gives the tape to Mick Jagger, which allowed the band to make a private function in a party of the Rolling Stones at New York's Danceteria on April 22, 1982.Shortly after that the band made the presentation of his career when playing at the Festival International de Jazz de Montreux, Switzerland, the first band is not preprogrammed to perform at this recital. They were crazy but ironically won a Grammy for the version of "Texas Flood" at the recital, which resulted in one of the most incredible live albums SRV "Live at Montreux".
Stevie Ray gradually rose to stardom this time around, when in 1982 contributes a David Bowie album and in 1983 he "discovered" by John Hammond (Head of discovering Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday and Bruce Springsteen among others) after hearing recording of the concert in Montreux, who offers her a recording contract for Epic Records. Only in 1983 released his first album, Texas Flood, after years of work. The repercussions were swift and Ray Vaughan was chosen by Guitar Player Magazine "Best New Talent", "Best Guitar Album (Texas Flood)" and "Best Electric Blues Guitarist", winning 3 awards in one year, being should also be noted that he was a newcomer in the industry.
In 1984 he released his second album: "Could not Stand The Weather". That same year, October 3, Stevie's 30th birthday, and celebrated with a huge concert at Carnegie Hall in New York, with guests Jimmie Vaughan (2nd guitar, brother Stevie), Angela Strehli (vocals), Dr . John (piano) and George Rains (drums). Stevie tells the audience that is the best birthday of his life. Later that year, November 18, Stevie wins two National Blues Award for "Best Entertainer" (the more accurate translation would be "Top Showman") and "Best Blues Instrumentalist." This is the first white person to win any awards.
On September 28, 1986, Stevie Ray collapses drug abuse of various kinds in Ludwigshafen, Germany. He manages to do two concerts of the tour, but the next 13 are canceled. Get sober since October 13 of that year until his last day. Stevie makes a huge return to the scene in the spring of 1987 when MTV broadcast a recital as part of the coverage of spring break in Daytona Beach, Florida. Stevie also appears in the movie "Back to the Beach" playing "Pipeline" with Dick Dale, and finally in the Cinemax TV special for BB King with Eric Clapton, Albert King, Phil Collins, Gladys Knight, Paul Butterfield, Chaka Khan and Billy Ocean.
Other major live shows of the era were: presentation at the opening ceremony of the presidency of George Bush on January 23, 1989 and presenting at the MTV Unplugged performing "Rude Mood", "Pride And Joy" and "Testify" on 12-string acoustic guitar. In 1990 he released his album "Family Style", recorded with his brother. On August 27, 1990, a little before 1:00 AM, a helicopter carrying Stevie back to Chicago crashed seconds after takeoff. The 5 people on board die. An investigation later said that was due to pilot error.
