Fate Marable (Paducah, Kentucky, December 2, 1890 - January 16, 1947) was a pianist and conductor of hot American jazz.
He started playing in the riverboat traveling between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Mississippi River. Knowing the new sounds of "jazz" that had begun to play the New Orleans musicians, musicians Marable specifically recruited in that city.
The musicians of the band had to know how to play a wide variety of musical styles, both hearing and scores, and although Marable was a demanding bandleader, allowed his musicians to develop their individual skills, as in the case of Louis Armstrong whose gift for improvisation was encouraged by Marable. In addition to Armstrong, many musicians who would later become major figures in jazz began in Marable's band, including Red Allen, Baby Dodds, Johnny Dodds, Narvin Kimball, Pops Foster, Al Morgan, Gene Sedric, Jimmy Blanton, Earl Bostic and Zutty Singleton.
