Johnny Winter

John Dawson "Johnny" Winter (Beaumont, 23 February 1944), American blues guitarist and rock. Winter became a star of electric blues in the late sixties and the Woodstock festival was already a legend. During the last stage of Muddy Waters produced his last 3 albums.

From early Winter showed a strong attraction to music at the age of 4 years in her hometown was shown playing clarinet, until the age of 8 when he was forced to leave your orthodontist's orders due to a malocclusion produced by the instrument. That's when he started learning to play the ukulele from his father, but despite the talent that showed the instrument was his own father who was reason to quit and switch to the guitar at the age of 11. [1] Winter then took to a radio program called "The Big Bopper of" Chantilly Lace "giving a tour of the world of Blues, presented by a local dj called JP Richardson.

At 14 and already soaked Blues with a long record collection had been collecting a "Johnny and the Jammers" his first band with his brother Edgar. He spent his early youth recording tracks to record labels and performing regional outreach in bars looking to be heard and get a reputation in the world of blues, because of his work as usual with Clarence Garlow local blueman Calvin Johnson.2 or even get to touch, in 1962, with BB King's guitar it on a visit to a famous local Beaumont.1 During this time a trio formed "The Cyrstaliers and It and Them" would try to make a space in the local clubs also visit other cities like Chicago Blues satellite listening to other artists to pursue and capture the essence of the genre.

Its discovery came at a national level through an article in Rolling Stone in 1968, which earned him a contract with an owner of a New York club and recording with Columbia. His official debut album, Johnny Winter published in 1969, which also touch on various presentations and festivals including Woodstock.He later formed a band with former members of The McCoys, Johnny Winter And called. He got good sales between 1969 and 1970 with the album "Second Winter" and "Johnny Winter", respectively, during this time Winter suffered a heavy heroin addiction, which would record quickly and get over in 1973 Still Alive and Well. His albums became more and more blues-oriented hard at the end of the seventies also produced several albums for Muddy Waters with who got a pair of Grammy Awards, among other contributions.

In the eighties, after a long pause recorded three albums for the blues label Alligator. The first in 1984 contained remakes of old R & B themes and counted with the help of the "Albert Collins Icebrakers Band" label mates, making his second Grammy nomination. In 1986 he released "Third Degree", a record he shares with former colleagues on tour. Alternatively maintained their usual tours in various locations, performing and collaborating with other artists.Marks his return to the studio with a new nomination for a Grammy with its album "Let Me In". Again the following year with "Hey, Where's Your Brother? , "Also nominated for the Grammy Awards. That same year also comes to selling the compilation "Scorchin 'Blues" while continuing to tour, also collaborate in 1996 with his brother in the album "The Real Deal" by keeping their tours, in 1998, live work product goes on sale "Live In NYC '97" album that compiles 5 years of concert, the songs were chosen by fans as a tribute, the year also turned 30 years of their arrival to stardom.

Winter se convirtió en una estrella del blues eléctrico a finales de los años sesenta y para el festival de Woodstock ya era una leyenda. Durante la última etapa de Muddy Waters produjo sus 3 últimos discos.

Desde muy temprano Winter mostraba una fuerte atracción a la música; a la edad de 4 años en su ciudad natal se mostraba tocando el clarinete, hasta la edad de 8 cuando fue forzado a dejarlo por órdenes de su ortodoncista debido a un problema de maloclusión producido por el instrumento. Fue entonces cuando empezó a aprender a tocar el ukelele de su padre pero, a pesar del talento que mostraba con el instrumento, fue su mismo padre quien le motivo a dejarlo y cambiarlo por la guitarra a la edad de 11 años. 

En ese entonces Winter se aficiono a un programa de radio denominado "The Big Bopper of "Chantilly Lace" que daba un recorrido por el mundo del Blues, presentado por un dj local llamado J.P. Richardson.

A sus 14 y ya empapado de Blues con una larga colección de discos que había ido recopilando, forma "Johnny and the Jammers" su primera banda junto a su hermano Edgar. Pasó su temprana juventud grabando temas para disqueras de proyección regional y presentándose en los bares buscando ser escuchado y obtener una reputación dentro del mundo del blues, debido a su colaboración usual con bluemen locales como Clarence Garlow o Calvin Johnson.2 Incluso llego a tocar, en 1962, ante B.B. King con la guitarra de éste en una visita a un famoso local de Beaumont.1 Durante este tiempo formaría un trió “The Cyrstaliers and It and Them” que intentaría hacerse un espacio en los clubes locales, también visitaría otras ciudades satélite del Blues como chicago persiguiendo escuchando a otros artistas y captar la esencia del genero.

Su descubrimiento a nivel nacional llegó a través de un artículo en la revista Rolling Stone, en 1968, lo que le valió un contrato con un propietario de un club neoyorkino y una grabación con Columbia. Su disco de debut oficial, Johnny Winter publicado en 1969, año en el que tambien tocaría en distintas presentaciones y festivales incluyendo el de Woodstock.

Más tarde formó una banda con antiguos componentes de The McCoys, se llamó Johnny Winter And. Consiguió buenas ventas entre 1969 y 1970 con los álbumes “Second Winter” y “Johnny Winter”, respectivamente, Durante este tiempo Winter sufrió de una fuerte adicción a la heroína, de la que se sobrepondría rápidamente y grabaría en 1973 Still Alive and Well. Sus discos se hicieron cada vez más orientados al blues duro, a finales de los setenta produjo también varios álbumes de Muddy Waters con quien consiguiera un par de Premios Grammy, entre otras colaboraciones.

En los ochenta, luego de una larga pausa grabó tres discos para el sello de blues Alligator. El primero en 1984 contenía relanzamientos de viejos temas R&B y conto con la ayuda de la “Albert Collins Icebrakers Band”, compañeros de disquera, logrando su segunda nominación a los premios Grammy. En 1986 lanza “Third Degree”, un disco que comparte con antiguos compañeros de gira. Alternativamente mantiene sus habituales giras en distintos locales, ofreciendo conciertos y colaborando con otros artistas.

Marca su regreso a los estudios con una nueva nominación a los Grammy gracias a su álbum “Let Me In”. Vuelve al año siguiente con “Hey, Where's Your Brother? “, también nominado al los premios Grammy. Ese mismo año sale también a la venta el recopilatorio “Scorchin' Blues” mientras continua de gira, también colaboraría en 1996 con su hermano en el disco “The Real Deal” manteniendo sus giras; en 1998 producto del trabajo en vivo sale a la venta “Live In NYC '97” disco que recopila 5 años de concierto, las canciones fueron escogidas por sus seguidores a manera de tributo, año en el que también se cumplían 30 años de su llegada al estrellato.

Winter regresó en 2004 con su primer álbum en ocho años: I'm a Bluesman con el que logró de nuevo una excelente critica y otra nominación a los Grammy. Winter continua maravillando con su peculiar estilo a sus seguidores manteniendo sus giras, aunque en últimos años se ha visto afectado de salud y se ve obligado a realizar las presentaciones sentado, producto de un problema de Síndrome Túnel Carpiano asi como problemas en la cadera.3 Aun así mantiene en pie su vida artística, para mayo de 2009 se prevé el lanzamiento de un nuevo recopilatorio denominado “The Johnny Winter Anthology” distribuido por Sony Music Entertainment.
