Herbie Mann began playing the clarinet when he was nine but soon switched to the flute and clarinet, tenor. After serving in the army, played with the Mat Mathews Quintet's (1953-54) and then started working and recording as a group leader. During the years were from 1954 to 1958, he enrolled in the trend of the moment bop, sometimes collaborating with musicians such as Phil Woods, Buddy Collette, Sam Most, Bobby Jaspar and Charlie Rouse. He played well in the cool and was one of the few musicians in the fifties he recorded with the bass clarinet. In 1957 he recorded an entire album of unaccompanied flute.
After spending time playing and writing music for television in 1959 formed his Afro-Jazz Sextet, a group that used various drummers, flute vibráfonono and its leader. Toured Africa in 1960 and one in Brazil in 1961, got a hit with "Comin 'Home Baby" and recorded with pianist Bill Evans.

Mann also explored bossa nova, incorporated music from other cultures (and pop tunes) and counted among its collaborators with musicians such as Willie Bobo, Chick Corea (1965), Attila Zoller and Roy Ayers, the 1972 Newport Festival his sextet hadDavid Newman and Sonny Sharrock. He became producer of a subsidiary of Atlantic, Embroyo for three years and developed beyond the jazz music. In the seventies, Mann was fully involved in rock, pop, reggae and even disco. After leaving the company to Atlantic late, Mann formed his own company and went back to jazz.
He recorded for Chesky, made a recording with Dave Valentin and nineties he founded the Kokopelli label, which lasted until 1996.

Herbie Mann comenzó tocando el clarinete cuando tenía nueve años aunque pronto se pasó a la flauta y al clarinete tenor. Grabó para Chesky, hizo una grabación con Dave Valentin y en los noventa fundó el sello Kokopelli, que duró hasta 1996.
