Phil Woods

Philip Wells Woods (Springfield (Massachusetts), November 2, 1931) is an alto saxophonist, clarinetist and composer of jazz. It belongs to the current style of bebop.

Woods studied music with Lennie Tristano, who has been a great influence on his career at the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School. His friend, Joe Lopes was taught to play the clarinet as there was no saxophone major at Juilliard at the time. Although he never copied to Charlie Parker, was known as the "New Bird", a nickname that is also applied to other musicians like Sonny Stitt and Cannonball Adderley at one time or another in their careers.
After go to France in 1968, Woods led The European Rhythm Machine, a group that tended to the jazz vanguard. He returned to the United States in 1972 and, after a failed attempt to establish an electronic group, he formed a quintet that lasted, with some changes in its components, until 2004.

In 1979, Woods More Live recorded at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas. His best known work as an escort has been perhaps the pop tune of Billy Joel "Just the Way You Are," where he plays alto sax. Also played alto sax on the issue of Steely Dan's "Doctor Wu", their known and praised 1975 album Katy Lied and the success of Paul Simon, 1975 Have a Good Time.
